Training for researchers
Here at the JCU eResearch Centre, we are passionate about training researchers. Today’s researchers embark on increasingly complex careers in which big data management, cloud computing and programming are becoming more relevant. Acquiring sound data and computing skills can help researchers work more effectively in diverse disciplines and work environments. While researchers acquire some of these skills during their studies and work, formal training is increasingly being recognised as essential.
Research Hour (previously Hacky Hour)
Sharing our digital skills to improve your science.
We run regular, no-pressure meet-up sessions where you can ask questions and get help with technical problems in research. Maybe you've got a question about version control, programming, have a snippet of R, Python, Java or C code that you just can't get to work, or want some advice on data management or how to use the High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) system. If that sounds like you, you're in the right spot.

Speedy large data transfer
Research data is rapidly increasing in complexity: where entire datasets once fit onto floppy disks, small subsets now consume terabytes of storage. Transferring this amount of data requires lightning-fast network connectivity and the JCU eResearch Centre has a BEAST of a computer for just this task.
Meet BEAST - which stands for Byte Extraction: Accelerated Secure Transfers: a dedicated ingestion point for research data for transferring data to or from the cloud and other network storage locations, such as the JCU HPRC. BEAST is aptly named because it connects to the Internet at 10Gbps (10000Mbps) via fibre optic cable, resulting in a Fibre to the Desk (FTTD) setup.
We support connectivity to all major device types (USB, internal and external hard drives, memory cards and more) - and can copy data from 15 USB devices at once. Equipped with high-speed memory and storage, as well as a large on-board cache, moving data to the cloud or back to JCU is effortless.
The eResearch Centre can help you book time to access this computer to conduct your data transfers - let us know how much data you have, how it's stored and where it needs to go and we'll help you. We also provide a managed transfer service for researchers that have specialised requirements and provide advice to researchers on how they can most effectively use the BEAST to assist with Research Data Management.

The development of this robust, reliable digital library, is an on-going project supported by the eResearch Centre and the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library.
Dugong Aerial Survey Database
The database contains data from 54 aerial surveys for dugongs in nine regions along the Australian coast since 1984. Read on for more details and/or to obtain access.
Research Portfolio
We wanted the world to know about all the great research coming out of the JCU community, so we developed a one-stop shop for all active researchers at the University. The Research Portfolio allows visitors to easily find researchers by their areas of expertise, interests, publications, grants or funding, and prospective students can connect with supervisors.
The Research Portfolio is a portal with a difference: researchers only need to contribute information the University doesn't already know about them. By utilising data from existing sources, we make it easy for over 1000 researchers to promote their work to the world. Extra information such as avatars, biographies, interests and experience are easily self-managed by researchers online. The Portfolio continues to improve the quality of data sets across internal systems by providing researchers with a single view to update their data.

Journals@JCU
Discover open journals and publications produced and managed by researchers at James Cook University, one of the world's leading institutions focussing on the tropics. The JCU eResearch Centre operates Journals@JCU, a platform designed for the management and publication of scholarly journals, powered by Open Journal Systems (OJS).
Most journals available through Journals@JCU are provided as full open access, being supported by OJS as a comprehensive tool for managing the entire submission and editorial workflow and publication process for articles and issues online, including automatic DOI generation via Crossref. Individual journal managers have the ability to customise their journals' appearances, workflows and more in an easy-to-use interface.
